I really recommend this book, not only to scholarly persons looking for church history manuals, but to any Christian who likes to read. It is scholarly and shows tremendous research into the first and second century church, but is also easy reading and is very applicable to the world we live in today. The author brings out so many similarities between the times in which Polycarp lived and ministered and the church of today. Polycarp's faith and dedication in the midst of difficult times is challenging and encouraging to anyone who reads about his life. His attitude toward false doctrines in his time is entertaining as well as instructive. The book brings in many interesting insights about the end of the life of the apostle John, as well as many first century leaders. Anyone in Christian leadership will find Polycarp a great example for your life and leadership role. If you read the book you will be blessed.Product details

After reading this well written and informative book about Polycarp, I now have a better understanding about what the early church endured and the importance it plays in the church today. This book is an encouragement for us to have faith in the Word of God and know that our steadfastness will enable us to be victorious. Great book and one that I highly recommend.
As I read Polycarp and the Second Century Church, I felt as though I was walking with the great men and women of God of this period of the Church. The book made me very thankful for the contribution that believers who lived during the second century made, which is still impacting us and the world today. The book built my faith and sparked a new interest in me to learn more about Church History. A well-written book and a job well done!
One thing missing in the Body of Christ today is a connection between the 2nd Century and 21st Century Church. Through this great book we see what was happening in the church after the early Apostles---how they stood for holiness and righteous living, and were committed to the 1st Century Apostles teaching and the power of the Holy Spirit. This book will build your faith for walking in the Spirit and the Word today, and show the similarities between the believers of that day and the Spirit filled believers of today. A great read.
Advertised as history relating to Polycarp, but in reality it primarily promotes charismatic/pentecostal practices. Deceptive, not cool. The information relating to Polycarp (that I now consider questionable) was interesting, hence a generous 2-star rating. But I'll probably buy another book about Polycarp to get a more agenda-free perspective.
Stephen Long opens with the questions
“What happened to the Church after all the apostles died? What was the Church like 50 years after the book of Revelation was written? If you could time-travel back to AD 125, or 150, or 200, what kind of Church would you find functioning during that time?”
He then masterfully weaves the heart Jesus expresses in some of the letters to the seven churches (Revelation 2 and 3) with pertinent quotes from writers of the early church era, along with historically documented information concerning the cities, regional cultural influences, and spiritual struggles of the times to give the reader a sense of experiencing answers to the questions he posed in the first lines of the book. While studiously footnoted, Stephen's writing style remains wonderfully readable. I found myself drawn to read the Bible more with a view of application in how to live my daily life as I read about Polycarp (and other believers) dealing with how to live the application of their relationship with the true and living God amidst all the heretical fallacies and persecution of truth prevalent in the second century.

As a minister of the gospel and a Bible teacher for over 40 years, I have wondered at times what happened to the church after all of the apostles died and I have wondered if the church of today is much like the church of that period. After reading Polycarp, Disciple of the Apostle John, I finally see how close we are in our worship and service to Jesus Christ as the early church. Also, I was amazed at the amount of research and footnotes. The book is well written and answers many questions about the early history of the church.
This is an excellent book for those wanting to know more about the true history of the Christian Church from an author who has spent years researching and compiling an impressive account of Polycarp and other early church leaders. Stephen Long's writing factual style is easy to read and understand yet filled with information not easily available. It is a prized addition to my library and makes a great gift.
